Brueckner, who is currently unemployed, evaded an interview with Metropolitan Police detectives by invoking his legal rights under German law. Despite a formal request from the CPS to German prosecutors for his appearance, Brueckner was able to reject it due to lack of transparency regarding the allegations against him.
Brueckner’s lawyer expressed his client’s denial of involvement in the crime, highlighting the absence of DNA evidence linking him to the scene. Legal experts indicate the challenges in apprehending Brueckner in Germany, suggesting potential extradition to Portugal, an EU country, as a plausible option under ongoing discussions among authorities.
Circumstantial evidence connecting Brueckner to the case includes his phone signal near the McCanns’ apartment and prior convictions for child abuse. Witness testimonies in 2008 added to suspicions, although forensic evidence has not yet been found. Madeleine McCann disappeared in 2007 while vacationing with her family in Portugal.
Brueckner was serving a prison term in Germany for a separate crime when last September.
