“Fatal Police Shooting in Bedford Under Investigation”

Date:

An investigation by a police oversight body is in progress following the fatal shooting of a man by police after an armed standoff in Bedford. The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) dispatched investigators to the scene immediately after the incident and has officially launched an inquiry.

Responding to reports of vehicle damage on Aylesbury Road around 10:40 pm on Monday, Bedfordshire Police found a 41-year-old man barricaded inside a property, making threats. Specialized armed officers and negotiators spent several hours attempting to communicate with the man.

Evacuations began around 6 am on Tuesday when the man was observed pouring petrol out of a window, causing a gas odor. The man displayed a firearm from the property’s window, prompting armed officers to return to the scene. He was shot by officers outside the property around 9:30 am and pronounced dead before 10:30 am. A non-police firearm was discovered inside the property.

IOPC director Emily Barry expressed condolences to the man’s family and the affected community, emphasizing the importance of an independent investigation in cases of fatal police shootings. The inquiry is in its initial stages, focusing on the officers’ actions and decision-making.

The IOPC disclosed that a police rifle fired one shot, and two baton rounds were discharged, with one used earlier in the incident. Investigative efforts include reviewing police footage such as body-worn, drone, and vehicle cameras. The man’s identity, aged 41, has not been officially confirmed.
