A newly-elected council member from Reform UK has been suspended for sharing images of a Nazi flag and making derogatory remarks about a perceived ‘subhuman underclass’ in now-deleted social media posts.
Nathaniel Menday, who won the election to represent the Woodhouse ward on Sheffield City Council in the recent local elections, has been temporarily removed from his party due to the controversial posts on Twitter. Reform UK stated that Menday is under suspension “pending investigation” for actions that have tarnished the party’s reputation.
Reportedly, Menday posted pictures of a swastika, excerpts from Hitler’s Mein Kampf, and far-right symbols like the Sonnenrad, or ‘sun wheel.’
In one of his posts, Menday commented that people in the United Kingdom are less attractive and poorly dressed compared to other European nations and criticized the existence of what he described as a “disgusting, almost subhuman underclass” in the country.
A spokesperson for Reform UK informed the Sheffield Star that Menday’s suspension was due to his failure to disclose the controversial posts, emphasizing that the party does not endorse such statements.
Councillor Martin Smith of the Liberal Democrat group at Sheffield City Council expressed deep concern over Menday’s actions, labeling them as indicative of far-right extremism for promoting white supremacist symbols and making derogatory comments about specific groups.
This incident follows statements by Richard Tice, the party’s deputy leader, who had mentioned that Menday’s status would be reviewed post-election, leading to necessary decisions being taken.
Menday is the fourth Reform UK representative to face suspension after the May 7 local elections. Plymouth City Councilor Ben Rowe was suspended for sharing a post on social media depicting a bomb on Mecca and making divisive remarks about Jewish people. Additionally, Ashley Monk and Jo Monk of Worcestershire County Council were suspended for their refusal to accept the decisions of the Reform UK group.
