UK couple imprisoned in Iran faces communication ban

Date:

A couple from the UK, Lindsay and Craig Foreman, are currently imprisoned in Iran’s Evin Prison, where they have been isolated from their family and the outside world. The pair, both 53 years old from East Sussex, were sentenced to 10 years in jail for espionage following a trial in February, which was criticized as unfair. Minister Hamish Falconer described them as innocent tourists, and the UK government condemned their treatment.

The couple, initially detained in January 2025 during a motorcycle trip around the world, were left without contact with their family for months. While they were eventually allowed phone calls, these have now been revoked, causing distress to their loved ones. Lindsay’s sons, Joe Bennett and Toby Rutland, and Craig’s children, Kieran and Chelsea Foreman, have been advocating for their release but are now facing uncertainty about their parents’ well-being.

Following an interview with the BBC in May, the couple’s phone privileges were taken away. Joe expressed concern over the lack of communication, emphasizing the emotional toll it takes on the family. He highlighted the importance of maintaining contact with their imprisoned parents, especially given the challenging conditions they have faced.

The Foremans recently shared harrowing details of their ordeal inside the prison, including claims of mistreatment and executions of cellmates. Despite efforts by the FCDO to address the situation, concerns remain about the couple’s access to medical care and communication.

Joe revealed that the possibility of solitary confinement and separation has been raised as punitive actions. He emphasized the importance of the couple’s connection and expressed worries about their mental well-being if communication is further restricted. The family hopes for a resolution to the situation without resorting to extreme measures like hunger strikes.

The FCDO continues to work towards securing the couple’s release, providing consular support and engaging with Iranian authorities. Efforts are ongoing to ensure Lindsay and Craig’s safe return to the UK.
