As Donald Trump and Xi Jinping met outside China’s Great Hall of the People, their historic handshake signified the power dynamic between them, according to a body language expert who noted Xi’s apparent authority.
The visit between Trump and Xi in China has drawn global attention, focusing on discussions regarding the Iran conflict, trade issues, and Taiwan, which Xi emphasized as a key concern.
During their two-hour meeting on May 14, both leaders expressed positivity about the talks, with Xi describing US-China relations as paramount and Trump deeming the discussions as “extremely positive.”
From the outset, body language expert Louise Mahler observed a clear display of power dynamics between the two leaders, noting Xi’s perceived advantage in their interactions.
Analyzing their initial encounter, Mahler remarked on the mutual engagement and eye contact between Trump and Xi. Trump attempted to assert dominance with a series of hand pats, which were seen as a power move but arguably unsuccessful in establishing superiority.
Although Trump made gestures like guiding Xi forward with his arm, these actions were interpreted as friendly yet potentially condescending, particularly the repeated hand-patting.
In an interview with Fox News from Beijing, Trump described Xi as a warm individual, while in his opening statements before the talks, he expressed admiration for their friendship and optimism for an improved US-China relationship.
