A tragic incident in the Maldives involving a group of Italian divers resulted in the death of five individuals, including a university professor, her daughter, and three others. The group had been exploring underwater caves in Vaavu Atoll, with one body found 60m underwater and four others still missing.

Following the disappearance of the divers, rescue teams were deployed, but only one body has been recovered so far. An investigation has been initiated to determine the cause of the incident.

The University of Genoa expressed deep condolences for the loss of its students and faculty members. The Minister of University and Research also expressed sorrow over the tragedy, emphasizing the impact on the academic community. Search and rescue efforts continue as authorities work to recover the remaining missing divers.

Weather conditions were reported to be unfavorable during the dive, and investigations are ongoing by Maldivian authorities. The Italian Embassy in Sri Lanka is providing support to the families of the victims during this difficult time.
