A young child who went missing in a forest known for its bear population has been found safe and well after spending close to three days alone in the challenging wilderness.
Toma-Alexandru Zerestea, also known as Alex, went missing on a Monday in the Ruscă region near Sebeșu de Jos, Romania, while his father was occupied with repairing an electric fence.
After the child strayed into the woods and could not be located due to a momentary distraction, a massive search effort involving numerous rescue teams, drones, thermal imaging technology, and even search dogs was launched in the rugged mountainous terrain.
Despite the area’s reputation for dangerous wildlife and harsh weather conditions, the boy was located around 1.5 miles from his initial disappearance by a Black Hawk helicopter operated by the Ministry of Internal Affairs’ General Inspectorate of Aviation on Wednesday afternoon.
Mihail Soare, a member of the search-and-rescue team, descended from the helicopter to reach the child, who was found sheltering among the trees and was responsive. Soare stayed with Alex, providing warmth until ground support arrived.
Expressing his emotions, Soare commented, “It is a very emotional moment, I did not think I would ever live something like this. I have two children of my own, the emotion was overwhelming.”
Alex was taken to Sibiu Clinical Paediatric Hospital, where medical professionals determined he was stable and in good overall health, despite experiencing exhaustion and exposure, with no serious injuries reported. His father expressed immense joy upon their reunion.
Authorities in Romania hailed the successful outcome as a miracle given the inherent dangers of the Carpathian forest surroundings. While police have initiated a standard investigation into the incident, early indications suggest that the child simply wandered off.
