A tragic bus accident in Australia has claimed the life of a 26-year-old tourist, Serena Andreatta, who was fulfilling her dream. The incident occurred when a FlixBus coach carrying 30 passengers veered off the Bruce Highway near Gumlu in Queensland. Despite efforts by medical personnel, Serena succumbed to her injuries at the hospital.
Among the injured passengers were 19 individuals, mostly foreign nationals and British backpackers, who were promptly taken to medical facilities in Bowen, Ayr, and Townsville for treatment. Serena, originally from Argentina but residing in Italy, had recently arrived in Australia after traveling through Southeast Asia, including Vietnam and Thailand.
Having immigrated to Italy from Argentina a few years ago, Serena was known for her work as a waitress and hotel receptionist in Lombardy. She had a passion for travel and had explored various countries, documenting her adventures on social media. Accompanied by her friend Valentina Accardi, who sustained serious injuries and was hospitalized in Townsville, Serena was on a journey to experience different cultures.
The driver of the bus, a 70-year-old from Mackay, suffered minor injuries in the crash. FlixBus confirmed that he was not speeding and tested negative for alcohol and drugs, although Queensland Police are yet to verify these details. State premier David Crisafulli expressed sorrow over the loss of a young life and emphasized the need for improved safety measures on the Bruce Highway.
Transport Minister Brent Mickelberg echoed concerns about the highway’s safety record, citing previous incidents like a fatal crash in 2024 involving a Greyhound bus. The authorities are conducting a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the tragic accident. FlixBus extended its condolences to the affected families and is cooperating with the ongoing inquiries.
