“Nursing Students Face Financial Strain”

Date:

Almost all nursing students are feeling concerned about their financial situation, with over half of them having to make sacrifices in terms of food or utility bills due to the current cost of living challenges, according to a recent survey conducted by the Royal College of Nursing (RCN).

The survey revealed that 95% of nursing students are worried about their finances, with 56% of them having to cut back on essentials such as food and heating or electricity bills. Additionally, 34% of students mentioned facing a shortfall of over £500 monthly, leading them to either reduce essential expenses or accrue debts.

The RCN highlighted the potential impact of the financial strain on the nursing profession, mentioning that the cost of living crisis could hinder the influx of new nurses into the field. One student expressed concerns about accumulating a significant amount of debt while pursuing a nursing career.

The survey also indicated a rise in the number of students considering quitting their nursing studies, with reasons including challenges in balancing work and study, stress-related issues, and financial burdens.

In response to these findings, the RCN is advocating for enhanced financial support for nursing students, including regular increases in financial aid aligned with inflation. The organization also recommends upfront grants to cover additional expenses specific to nursing degrees, such as costs related to clinical placements.

Testimonials from nursing students further illustrate the financial struggles they face. For instance, one student mentioned canceling various direct debits and receiving threats from utility companies due to payment delays.

The Department of Health and Social Care assured that support measures are in place for nursing students, including non-repayable grants and financial assistance for specific specializations. The upcoming 10-Year Workforce Plan aims to improve working conditions and training opportunities within the NHS.

The State of the Student Nation survey conducted by the RCN gathered responses from 2,504 nursing students currently enrolled in courses across the UK.
