Several leading airlines have provided updates to passengers in anticipation of the upcoming summer holiday season amid concerns about fuel shortages stemming from the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
The surge in oil prices followed joint strikes by the US and Israel on Iran, prompting retaliatory actions that included the closure of the vital Strait of Hormuz trade route, impacting a significant portion of global oil trade. Despite a fragile short-term ceasefire, no lasting peace accord has been established.
Worries about travel during the summer holidays have escalated due to potential jet fuel availability issues. Airlines such as TUI, Jet2, Ryanair, and EasyJet have communicated with customers, ensuring that services will continue with minimal interruptions.
TUI has reassured customers that operations will persist, although potential price increases could occur. The company’s CFO, Mathais Kiep, mentioned that there is sufficient fuel for the next 10 weeks, with strategies in place to mitigate immediate operational risks.
Ryanair expressed confidence in jet fuel availability for the summer period, citing an abundant supply in Europe. However, the budget airline cautioned that booking flights later in the season might result in higher fares.
EasyJet emphasized that its operations remain unaffected by the fuel crisis, introducing the Book With Confidence Promise to maintain fixed costs after booking, shielding customers from fuel surcharge fluctuations.
Jet2 reported an uptick in customers opting for holiday packages, with the CEO highlighting the security they offer during uncertain times. While the aviation industry currently maintains a steady supply, concerns linger over potential jet fuel shortages in Europe if the Middle East conflict persists.
The UK government is considering precautionary measures to prevent disruptions for holidaymakers, including consolidating schedules on routes with multiple flights to the same destination. Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander confirmed preparations to ensure long-term certainty and avoid unnecessary disruptions during the summer travel season.
