King Charles met with Irish president Catherine Connolly on the first day of her three-day official visit, which includes various engagements in London and Leeds. The two were captured exchanging greetings and posing for photos at the palace.
During a nearly hour-long meeting, Ms. Connolly expressed delight in inviting the King for a state visit, a rare occurrence for a British monarch to Ireland since its independence. Notably, Queen Elizabeth II made a memorable state visit to Ireland in 2011, strengthening British-Irish relations.
Describing the encounter with King Charles as wonderful, the Irish president highlighted the warm welcome she received, acknowledging his positive stance on peace and reconciliation in Ireland. She emphasized the close historical ties between the two nations, referencing past significant visits.
Ms. Connolly emphasized the extensive Irish influence across various sectors in British society, noting her commitment to engaging with the Irish diaspora. The visit commenced with a visit to the Irish Cultural Centre in London, where she interacted with attendees and delivered a speech.
Attendees, including Aengus Collins O’Malley and Oisin Moroney, expressed gratitude for the president’s outreach to the Irish community. The significance of her promotion of Irish culture and language was praised by community members like Larry O’Leary.
The Irish ambassador to Britain, Martin Fraser, and Deirdre Fraser are scheduled to host a reception in honor of Ms. Connolly at the Irish embassy in London. The visit itinerary includes stops at the Chelsea Flower Show, the London Irish Centre, Leeds University, and the Irish Health Centre in Leeds.
Ms. Connolly’s visit to Leeds marks her third official trip since assuming office, demonstrating her dedication to fostering connections with Irish communities in various regions.
