“Friend Testifies: Partner’s Abuse History in London Murder Trial”

Date:

During the trial, the close friend of a woman who was fatally stabbed by her partner and died in a house explosion in London recounted the partner’s history of uncontrollable anger and abusive conduct over the years.

Clifton George, aged 45, stands accused of the murder of Annabel Rook, 46, following a dispute at their residence on Dumont Road, Stoke Newington, on June 17, 2025.

Although George has admitted to causing Rook’s death through manslaughter, he denies the charge of murder, attributing the fatal stabbing to a loss of self-restraint.

Testifying at Snaresbrook Crown Court, Ms. Rook’s best friend, Sian Davlin, shared that she initially hoped for the relationship between Rook and George to succeed but changed her stance upon learning about George’s abusive patterns.

She revealed that witnessing George physically assaulting Rook by pushing her against a wall and restraining her with his forearm was the turning point that shifted her perspective on their relationship.

According to Ms. Davlin, George often exhibited disproportionate reactions to minor issues, revealing his insecure nature and tendency to belittle, fat-shame, and gaslight Rook.

Ms. Davlin detailed numerous instances where George’s temper flared into rage between 2015 and 2025, recounting one incident in a London park where she urged George to calm down, only to be met with accusations of racial stereotyping.

Further insights provided by Ms. Davlin described George’s manipulation tactics each time Rook contemplated separating from him, with Rook eventually recognizing the abusive nature of George’s behavior by the summer of 2024.

Prior to her tragic demise, Rook signaled her intention to end the relationship in a message to her sister, expressing concern over potential future conflicts with George and emphasizing the need for strength to navigate the situation.

Notably, Annabel Rook, daughter of retired Old Bailey judge Peter Rook, co-founded MamaSuze, a social enterprise in London supporting refugee and migrant women through art and drama initiatives.

While George has pleaded guilty to manslaughter and arson, he denies the murder charge as the trial progresses.
