Britain is gearing up for a surge in early summer heat as updated weather forecasts indicate temperatures could reach 31C in some parts of England next week. The ECMWF weather model projects the hottest conditions centered around London and the South East, with temperatures potentially peaking on May 28. Counties like Essex, Kent, Berkshire, and Buckinghamshire are among the areas expected to experience intense heat as the month progresses.
In addition, many regions across the South East, South West, and parts of the Midlands are forecasted to surpass 28C, with southern England likely to see temperatures ranging from 24C to 29C. Cities such as Norwich, Oxford, Cambridge, Reading, and Windsor and their surrounding areas are set to enjoy unusually high temperatures for late May as warm air spreads across the UK.
The heatwave is not limited to the southern regions, as Wales, northern England, and Scotland are also expected to see temperatures well above the seasonal average, with highs reaching the low to mid-20s. Even areas further north could experience temperatures around 20C, bringing warm conditions to much of the country.
If the predictions hold true, May 28 could become one of the hottest days of the year so far. The Met Office has cautioned that “high pressure is expected to remain in place” over much of the country as May draws to a close. The long-range forecast from May 24 to June 2 suggests warm and dry conditions for most areas, with above-normal temperatures and light winds, although some patchy rain may affect the far north and a few showers in the far south.
