“WHO Defends Response to Deadly Ebola Outbreak”

Date:

The Ebola outbreak, according to the World Health Organization, began a few months ago. Despite criticism from the United States, the WHO defended its response.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio mentioned that the WHO was slow in identifying the disease. He emphasized the importance of organizations like the CDC and WHO in leading such efforts.

The WHO officially declared the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and neighboring Uganda as a public health emergency of international concern due to the Bundibugyo virus. This strain of the virus has caused over 130 deaths and poses challenges as there are no specific treatments or vaccines available.

During a press conference, Anais Legand, a WHO academic researcher, stated that surveillance within communities and health organizations in each country is crucial. The WHO provided support to investigate the outbreak promptly.

Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the WHO director-general, responded to Rubio’s criticism, highlighting the agency’s role in supporting countries. He emphasized the importance of understanding the International Health Regulations.

As of now, there have been 51 confirmed cases in the DRC and two in Uganda, with many more suspected cases. The risk of the Ebola outbreak spreading globally is low but remains high at national and regional levels.

Bundibugyo virus has caused previous outbreaks in the same region. Other viruses known for causing Ebola disease include the Ebola, Sudan, and Taï Forest viruses, each with varying outbreak potentials.
