“British Couple’s Children Petition for Parents’ Release in Iran”

Date:

The offspring of a British couple detained in Iran on suspicion of espionage presented a petition at Downing Street today, urging swift intervention from the UK government. Lindsay and Craig Foreman, both 53 years old, have been imprisoned in Tehran since January 2025, facing ten-year espionage sentences that they refute. The couple was apprehended during a motorcycle expedition around the globe.

Their children, Joe Bennett (31) and Toby Rutland (19), along with Craig’s offspring Kieran (28) and Chelsea Foreman (30), have amassed over 84,000 signatures appealing for their parents’ release. Joe emphasized their determination, stating, “We are fully committed to advocating for their freedom and will persist in our efforts.” The family, accompanied by supporters, including former Tory leader Iain Duncan Smith and various parliamentarians, convened to present the petition. Additionally, an adjournment debate is scheduled in Parliament on Thursday led by Baroness Helena Kennedy, MP Brendan O’Hara, and MP Tony Vaughan.

Joe, who resigned from his software sales position to focus on the campaign for his mother and stepfather’s release, expressed concern about their well-being amid reports that they are on a hunger strike. He acknowledged the challenging circumstances, remarking, “It’s a distressing situation as we lack direct communication with them. Their hunger strike underscores their desperation to return home and escape the Iranian regime’s manipulation and deceit.”

Describing the harrowing conditions of their detention, Joe highlighted the squalid environment, inadequate sustenance, and lack of exercise facilities. He underscored the immense challenges his parents are enduring and the urgent need for international action to address such injustices.

Minister Hamish Falconer recently characterized the couple as “innocent tourists,” condemning the Iranian authorities’ actions as “appalling.” The UK Foreign Office reiterated its commitment to securing the safe return of Lindsay and Craig, emphasizing the unjust nature of their incarceration.

MP Tony Vaughan emphasized the family’s frustration over the prolonged detention and urged the government to intensify efforts to reunite Craig and Lindsay with their loved ones. Fellow MP Iain Duncan Smith, a motorcycle enthusiast, joined the advocacy campaign, asserting that the couple are hostages subjected to unwarranted suffering. He called for decisive measures to hold Iran accountable for its actions and ensure the protection of British citizens abroad.
