“Vegan Student’s Tragic Suicide Linked to B12 Deficiency”

Date:

A young woman studying at a university tragically ended her own life due to delusions stemming from deficiencies in her vegan diet, according to an official inquiry. Georgina Owen, 21, from Saffron Walden, Essex, embraced veganism in 2016 out of environmental concerns, which led to a lack of essential vitamin B12 typically found in animal-based products. The coroner, Elizabeth Gray, revealed that in August 2019, Georgina’s family noticed she had neglected to take her B12 supplements for at least six months.

Miss Owen, who acknowledged forgetting her supplements, passed away by suicide in September 2019 after displaying unusual and erratic behavior. She was scheduled to return to Swansea University on September 19 that year but was discovered at her residence with a note. Despite efforts by emergency responders to revive her, she succumbed at Addenbrooke’s Hospital on September 21.

Coroner Gray mentioned that Georgina had informed her family about acquiring an organic B12 supplement from Canada, which she was supposed to take as a 1mg oral spray daily. The family shared diaries indicating Georgina’s erratic conduct and declining mental health before her demise.

A psychiatrist noted that while Georgina’s diary entries did not directly show suicidal intent, her final note suggested a potential mental illness likely exacerbated by vitamin B12 deficiency. Blood tests confirmed the deficiency, which was attributed to her vegan diet over three years. The coroner concluded that Georgina acted on delusional beliefs due to the deficiency.

The expert report highlighted Georgina’s cognitive issues, anxiety, decision-making challenges, and fatigue before her death, indicating a progressive psychiatric disorder culminating in her delusional beliefs. Described as vibrant and well-liked by her peers and lecturers at Swansea University, Georgina had plans to resume her studies and enjoy activities like surfing.

Vitamin B12, essential for various bodily functions, is primarily found in animal products and fortified foods. Deficiency can lead to psychological issues, fatigue, muscle weakness, and cognitive impairments. The NHS advises addressing B12 deficiency promptly to prevent severe complications.
