Chris Kennedy, representing the Green Party, was initially announced as a candidate for the seat but later withdrew due to “personal and family reasons.” Reports indicated that Kennedy had shared an Instagram video dismissing the arrests of two men related to the incident as a conspiracy to perpetuate a false narrative.
Furthermore, Kennedy shared a post by a user named Hugh Anthony, who identified as an “ethno-nationalist,” questioning the response to the Golders Green arson attack as illogical. Following these actions, counter-terror authorities launched an investigation into the attack on the Hatzola volunteer ambulance corps.
In response to the controversy, a Green Party spokesperson clarified that Kennedy’s views did not align with the party’s stance. Kennedy subsequently deleted the posts and expressed regret for any offense caused.
While reiterating Kennedy’s withdrawal for personal reasons, the Green Party emphasized the importance of providing Makerfield residents with a genuine choice in the upcoming by-election. The party highlighted its commitment to contesting Reform, a party accused of promoting division within communities.
The nomination process for a new candidate has commenced, with a selection meeting scheduled for Monday evening. The by-election was triggered by the resignation of former Labour minister Josh Simons.
