“Science Teacher Banned for After-Hours Emails to Students”

Date:

A teacher in the field of science has been barred from teaching due to sending numerous emails to students outside of school hours, with some as late as 2am, and then urging them to delete the messages to conceal her actions.

Named Jennifer Farron, she worked at St John Bosco Arts College in Croxteth, Liverpool, for approximately eight years. Reports from a teacher regulation agency disclosed that Farron, 34, had exchanged nearly 160 emails with a student identified as pupil J.

Additionally, there were more emails between Farron and another student named pupil AM. Pupil AM mentioned that there was no hidden agenda in their exchanges but was puzzled by the teacher’s request to erase the conversations.

Farron served as a science teacher at the Storrington Avenue school starting in September 2017. Concerns arose in June 2024 regarding her interactions with pupil J, leading to her suspension that same month and subsequent dismissal in February of the following year. The matter was then referred to the TRA in March 2025.

Before a closed-door hearing, Farron acknowledged sending and receiving an excessive volume of emails with pupil AM outside of school hours. It was noted that multiple emails had been deleted, with discussions ranging from personal matters to the emotional well-being of the students. Farron admitted to breaching professional boundaries during this period, with close to 160 emails exchanged between her and pupil J within a 90-day span.

The emails between Farron and the students occurred at various hours, including late at night and during school holidays, violating the school’s communication policy. Farron was found discussing personal matters, emotional states, and relationships with the pupils, creating an environment where students felt comfortable sharing their feelings with her.

Following an investigation, Farron expressed regret for causing distress and disruption to the students and their families. She admitted to making errors in judgment by blurring professional boundaries and apologized for any harm caused.

The TRA decided to prohibit Farron from teaching in England indefinitely, with a possibility of appeal after three years. St John Bosco Arts College confirmed her suspension in 2024 and subsequent dismissal after an internal inquiry, leading to the involvement of the Teaching Regulation Agency.
