“4.8 Magnitude Earthquake Rattles Gran Canaria”

Date:

The holiday destination Gran Canaria experienced a 4.8 magnitude earthquake, causing tremors felt by both residents and visitors across the island this morning. Reports indicated that the seismic activity was also noticeable on the nearby Canary island of Fuerteventura.

The earthquake, initially measured at 4.8 magnitude by the Canary Islands Seismic Network, was quickly confirmed to be unrelated to Tenerife’s seismic activity. While it remains uncertain if the quake resulted in any damage or injuries, authorities have advised those affected to seek assistance from emergency services.

Local TV program ‘Buenos Días Canarias’ of Televisión Canaria broadcasted live updates, featuring accounts from individuals who experienced the shaking in their homes and workplaces. The National Geographic Institute (IGN) confirmed the earthquake’s location in the sea off the northern coast of Gran Canaria, with the epicenter approximately 59 kilometers from the island’s capital, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.

Involcan scientists emphasized that the earthquake was distinct from the volcanic seismic activity observed in Tenerife, despite causing concern among the population. While initial automated data provided an estimate of the earthquake’s intensity, experts from IGN and Involcan are conducting a thorough analysis of the seismic waves detected.

The final magnitude of the earthquake and the precise depth of its origin in the seabed are yet to be determined, according to the seismic monitoring centers.
