Three individuals lost their lives in a tragic accident on the A1 in Northumberland, as reported by Northumbria Police. The incident occurred between Denwick and South Charlton, involving a silver Volkswagen Polo and a red Hyundai i20 colliding head-on.
The male driver and female passenger of the Hyundai, both elderly, were pronounced dead at the scene. Additionally, a female passenger from the Polo, in her 60s, also succumbed to her injuries, while the male driver, also in his 60s, was airlifted to a hospital with severe injuries.
Authorities have notified the next of kin of the Polo occupants and are providing them with specialized support. Efforts are ongoing to inform the next of kin of the Hyundai occupants. Following the collision, a section of the road was closed for approximately seven hours before reopening.
The Serious Collision Investigation Unit (SCIU) of Northumbria Police has initiated an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident. Police urge anyone with information or potential CCTV/dashcam footage from the area at the time of the accident to come forward to assist in the investigation.
