In a surprising video, a newly-elected Reform council member has openly admitted to her lack of understanding, stating she is unsure of what she is voting for. Councilor Sarah Wood made this candid revelation during a recent meeting of Kirkless Council in West Yorkshire, following Reform UK’s rise as the council’s dominant party.
During the meeting, Cllr Wood confessed, “I do not comprehend the constitution. I have not had enough time to review it yet. I am unfamiliar with standing orders, their components, or the concept of an amendment.” This admission came as she was being considered for the council’s leadership position, with her party holding 29 seats, six short of a majority.
In response to a proposal for a head-to-head vote between a Green councillor and Wood, which required the suspension of standing orders, Reform criticized their opponents for taking advantage of their lack of knowledge. Cllr Wood highlighted the potential risk of voting without full comprehension of the proceedings, calling it undemocratic.
Despite objections, the council proceeded with the vote on the proposed head-to-head, which Reform reportedly opposed, resulting in the motion’s failure. The meeting was adjourned for further discussions on selecting a leader and determining the council’s future management.
Independent councilor Tanisha Bramwell condemned the situation as “appalling,” emphasizing the need for competent leadership to avoid past failures in council governance. She stressed the importance of having capable individuals in leadership roles to prevent negative impacts on the community and essential services.
The incident underscores the necessity for council members to grasp the responsibilities of their roles and make informed decisions for the benefit of the community.
