The Mirror has been honored with a prestigious award at the Press Awards. Ros Wynne-Jones, the Real Britain editor, received the Excellence in Diversity award for her series called Island of Strangers. This series delves into how different communities in Britain come together to overcome challenges. Judges commended her for amplifying the voices of marginalized individuals, highlighting its crucial role in today’s journalism landscape.
The Island of Strangers series involved Ros, along with colleagues John Domokos, Claire Donnelly, and Maryam Qaiser, traveling across the country to explore stories of hope in struggling areas. In Middlesbrough, they visited the Flower Patch, where refugees and locals collaborate to grow flowers and revitalize abandoned green spaces. Similarly, in Cardiff, they spent time with a cabaret group for seniors in one of the city’s toughest neighborhoods.
Ros expressed her gratitude for creating the series, emphasizing the privilege of showcasing the untold stories of communities in Rotherham, Cardiff, Liverpool, and Stockton-on-Tees. She believes that by shedding light on communities that have bridged divides and embraced diversity, the true essence of Britain as a nation of neighbors is revealed.
