Tragic Incident Results in Young Boy’s Death by Drowning in River
In a heartbreaking incident, a 12-year-old boy named Khaled Basem Al Satouf lost his life after getting trapped between rocks in the River Swale at Richmond Falls. The incident occurred on August 16 while Khaled was with his family on a pebble beach in North Yorkshire.
Witnesses reported that Khaled had been playing in the water before his family’s frantic screams alerted others to his disappearance. His body was later discovered submerged about 12 feet below the river’s surface, wedged between two rocks. The assistant coroner for North Yorkshire, Alison Norton, confirmed that Khaled’s death was accidental and attributed to drowning.
According to accounts from the Northallerton Coroner’s Court, Khaled, from Leeds, was part of a group of seven family members present during the tragedy. Witnesses described a scene of people enjoying the water activities in the area, with Khaled seemingly having a good time.
One witness, Paul Norton, recalled observing Khaled playing in the water up to his neck but did not perceive any immediate danger. However, moments later, screams rang out as Khaled vanished from sight, leading to a frantic search effort.
Another witness, a child who remained anonymous, shared how she was near Khaled when he disappeared. She recounted thinking he was joking before realizing the seriousness of the situation as he struggled in the water.
Despite prompt response from North Yorkshire Police, who were alerted around 5 pm, Khaled could not be located until later that evening, around 10:45 pm. Authorities confirmed that there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding the tragic incident.
