“Government Scientists Concealed Nuclear Test Risks to British Soldiers”

Date:

Government scientists were aware that British soldiers would have children with birth defects due to nuclear bomb tests, but they chose not to inform them. The reasoning behind this decision was that the number of people involved was limited, thus posing a “negligible” risk to humanity. An unpublished official report acknowledged the lack of comfort this provided to those affected.

One such soldier was Michael Watson, who was exposed to nuclear tests in Maralinga, Australia, in 1963, and later in Christmas Island. His wife, Margaret, suffered multiple miscarriages, and their children faced various health issues, including autism, infertility, and physical deformities.

The descendants of British nuclear veterans, estimated at 155,000 individuals, have experienced high rates of miscarriages, birth defects, and child mortality, yet government inquiries into these matters have been consistently denied. Recent scientific research has confirmed the transmission of genetic defects from radiation-exposed fathers to their offspring.

Documents authored by Professor John Butterfield, a key figure in biological observations during the 1950s nuclear tests, shed light on the genetic implications of radiation exposure. Despite his warnings on the potential risks of genetic mutations, successive governments have dismissed calls for compensations, citing insufficient evidence of radiation-induced genetic defects.

Campaigners are advocating for a meeting with the Prime Minister to present new evidence and demand comprehensive investigations into the health issues faced by the descendants of nuclear veterans. The Ministry of Defence maintains that there is no conclusive proof of an increased prevalence of genetic mutations or health conditions among the children of nuclear test veterans, compared to the general public.
