Teen Assault Victim Criticizes Judge’s Lenient Ruling

Date:

A teenager who experienced a traumatic incident of assault by two boys expressed her shock and disappointment over the judge’s decision to spare them jail time. The girl, now 16, voiced her frustration, questioning the leniency of the sentences, which made her feel as though the boys’ actions were deemed acceptable under the law due to their age.

In an interview with the BBC, the girl recounted the emotional turmoil she endured during the court proceedings, questioning the purpose of her painful experience of reliving the assault through the trial. She revealed the profound impact the assault had on her mental health, causing her to struggle for six months before speaking up about the ordeal.

The incident occurred when the girl, aged 15 at the time, met one of the boys for the first time after connecting on Snapchat. However, the situation escalated when additional individuals arrived, leading to a harrowing assault in an underpass near the River Avon, where she was subjected to a distressing experience lasting 90 minutes.

During the trial, it was disclosed that the girl was initially nervous but felt comfortable with one of the defendants before the situation turned alarming with the presence of others, who pressured her and recorded the assault, later sharing the videos and subjecting her to humiliation and derogatory messages.

The boys were found guilty of assaulting two girls, with the first attack on the victim occurring in November 2024 and a subsequent incident involving another girl in January 2025. The victim’s mother expressed dismay over the trial process, questioning the adequacy of the outcome and appealing for justice for the victims.

Following public outcry, the attorney general is set to review the sentencing under the Unduly Lenient Scheme to assess if the punishment was too lenient. The family’s plea for harsher penalties has garnered support from Cabinet Minister Darren Jones, who emphasized the need for justice and accountability in cases of such gravity.
