“Royal Police Misconduct Probe Expands to More Officers”

Date:

An investigation into alleged misconduct by royal police officers has been expanded to include more officers. The probe, focused on the Metropolitan Police’s Royalty and Specialist Protection (RaSP) unit, was initiated following claims that officers failed in their duty to protect King Charles III. Over 20 royal protection officers have already received misconduct notices, with some accused of sleeping on duty and others failing to attend their posts after clocking in.

The scrutiny now extends to officers at Buckingham Palace, with concerns that lax practices seen at Windsor Castle may be pervasive across other royal residences. The Royalist and Specialist Protection team oversees security at the castle, which falls under the jurisdiction of Thames Valley Police.

According to the Metropolitan Police, 23 officers have been served with misconduct notices related to the Windsor Castle investigations, with 21 placed on restricted duties. The remaining two officers will not be deployed to any royal residence during the ongoing investigation.

The Directorate of Professional Standards at the Met Police is leading the inquiry, prompted by reports of officers neglecting their duties and engaging in unprofessional behavior. The Independent Office for Police Conduct has been informed and the matter will be investigated internally by the Met.

Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley emphasized the high standards expected of officers in protective roles, reiterating the gravity of the allegations. The specialist unit’s responsibilities include foot patrols, monitoring castle entrances, and implementing security measures like alarms and fencing.

As the investigation continues, inquiries are being made into the conduct of officers at other royal locations. The King and the Royal Household are reportedly aware of the situation, with ongoing efforts to ensure the integrity and professionalism of protective services at royal residences.
