Wellness Coach Dies After Amazon Frog Detox

Date:

A British wellness coach and cancer survivor passed away following a purported “detox” ritual involving a substance derived from the toxic skin of an Amazonian tree frog. Kristian Trend, aged 40, reportedly collapsed at his residence in Leicester after ingesting Kambo, a substance traditionally used in South America for fertility ceremonies and purging practices. Kambo, made from the poisonous dried skin secretions of the giant leaf frog, is available for purchase in the UK despite being prohibited in various countries.

The late 40-year-old’s mother, Angie, has urged for the prohibition of alternative medicine after her son’s tragic demise last month. Kambo has gained popularity in Europe as individuals embrace the toxic treatment for its perceived wellness benefits and potential for transformative experiences.

Speaking to The Telegraph, Angie described her son as “very spiritual” and shared that he had expressed intentions of self-cleansing before the incident. While awaiting test results, Angie remains uncertain about the circumstances surrounding her son’s death, emphasizing that knowing the details won’t bring him back.

Having endured a battle with Burkitt lymphoma cancer, Kristian rebounded after a challenging four-month hospitalization. Reflecting on his journey with cancer, Kristian previously shared online about choosing to embrace a higher purpose after holistic wellness experiences in India and Asia. Tragically, his passing occurred during his birthday week.

Although the exact cause of Kristian’s death is yet to be confirmed, there are speculations linking it to Kambo, which could potentially mark the first reported British fatality associated with the substance. Leicestershire Police disclosed that a man fell ill at a Leicester residence on April 11 and subsequently died in a hospital. A 41-year-old individual was arrested on suspicion of administering poison but was later released on bail as investigations into the incident continue.

Kambo, also known as Sapo, lacks licensing by the UK’s Medicines and Healthcare Regulatory Agency as a medicinal product. The MHRA does not oversee the administration of this alternative treatment. Angie called for a ban on the substance, expressing her inability to advocate for it due to personal loss and grief.

In memory of Kristian, his family initiated a fundraiser for the Loros hospice charity in Leicestershire. They aim to honor his legacy by raising funds for a cause that held significant importance for him and their family. Additionally, Kristian’s family plans to sell the remaining inventory of his plant-based energy drink, Feel Good Polys, and contribute the proceeds to charity.

The Home Office is collaborating with health authorities to monitor Kambo. A spokesperson extended condolences to Mr. Trend’s family and emphasized the need for caution when considering alternative therapies, highlighting potential health risks associated with such practices.
