“UK Braces for 35C Heatwave, Health Alerts Issued”

Date:

The Met Office has issued a warning that eight regions in the UK are expected to experience temperatures reaching as high as 35C on Tuesday. Following a record-breaking heatwave in May, particularly affecting the southern parts of the country during the bank holiday weekend, the national weather service predicts continued high temperatures.

On Monday, the UK saw its highest May temperature ever recorded when temperatures reached 33.5C at Heathrow, later broken by a new record of 34.8C at Kew Gardens in London. The Met Office forecasts another scorching day on Tuesday, with temperatures expected to rapidly rise, reaching 35C in London, the Home Counties, and Cambridgeshire. Additionally, temperatures above 30C are anticipated in eastern Wales, and eastern, southern, and central England, excluding coastal areas.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued amber heat-health alerts for five English regions, cautioning about potential strains on health and social care services due to the high temperatures. The agency warned that the extreme heat could lead to an increase in fatalities, especially among individuals aged 65 and older or those with underlying health conditions.

According to the Met Office, the hot weather will persist throughout the week, with temperatures of 31C on Wednesday, 30C on Thursday, 27C on Friday, and 28C on Saturday. Dr. Anya Gopfert, a health protection consultant at UKHSA, emphasized the importance of taking precautions, particularly for vulnerable individuals, during the warm weather period.

As people in the UK prepare to enjoy the sunshine with friends and family, the British Red Cross has provided guidance on staying safe. Dafydd Beech, the national community education manager at the British Red Cross, highlighted the significance of taking preventive measures such as applying sunscreen, staying hydrated, and taking breaks from direct sunlight to prevent dehydration, sunburn, or heatstroke. Developing these habits early can better prepare individuals for prolonged hot weather conditions.
