A mother who used lozenges to alleviate a painful sore throat was shocked to discover it was cancer, likely triggered by oral sex. Leanne Addis endured a ten-week ordeal starting in February 2024 with a sore throat, resorting to lozenges and paracetamol for relief. However, when a sizable lump appeared on her neck and her mouth began to bleed, she sought medical help in May 2024.
Following a visit to her GP, Leanne was prescribed antibiotics and referred to hospital specialists for further evaluation. Subsequently, a scan and biopsy revealed the heartbreaking news that she had oropharyngeal cancer, attributed to HPV 16, a sexually transmitted infection.
Despite just embarking on a relationship with her fiancé, John Graham, Leanne underwent grueling rounds of chemotherapy and radiation therapy, ultimately achieving a clean bill of health and now undergoing bi-monthly check-ups.
Emphasizing the importance of early detection, Leanne, residing in Swansea, South Wales, shared her ordeal to raise awareness and promote HPV vaccination where applicable. Reflecting on her journey, Leanne recalled the initial shock of her diagnosis despite being at the peak of her fitness and health. She stressed the need for timely medical attention for any unusual symptoms and advocated for HPV vaccination to prevent similar experiences.
As she continues her recovery journey, Leanne remains vigilant with regular consultations and encourages others to prioritize their health.
