“Stepmother Convicted 50 Years Later in Scalding Bath Tragedy”

Date:

A young girl tragically passed away from severe burns sustained in a scalding bath incident involving her stepmother. Andrea Bernard, aged five at the time, was punished by Janice Nix in Thornton Heath, south London, in 1978. Nix, now 67, was convicted of manslaughter nearly 50 years later, following the heartbreaking event.

Andrea, who suffered extensive burns, expressed distress over the hot water before succumbing to her injuries in the hospital five weeks later. The police shared a photo of Andrea looking forward to her last Christmas after Nix’s conviction, which came about after Andrea’s brother revealed new details to authorities in 2022.

Besides the tragic death of Andrea, Nix was also found guilty of assaulting and mistreating Andrea’s older brother, Desmond Bernard, between 1975 and 1978. During the trial, it was revealed that Nix provided conflicting accounts of the events to the police and the coroner. Desmond Bernard, now 56, disclosed instances of physical abuse by Nix towards him and his sister.

Nix, known as Janice Thomas in her late teens, was primarily responsible for the children’s care due to their father’s work commitments. Desmond Bernard recounted the events leading to his sister’s death, highlighting Nix’s aggressive behavior towards Andrea.

The court heard how Nix forcefully instructed Andrea to take a bath, leading to the tragic incident. Nix initially misled investigators during the 1978 inquiry but later admitted to providing false information due to negligence and panic.

Following her arrest in 2025 upon returning from Antigua, Nix faced charges of manslaughter and child cruelty, which she denied. The Crown Prosecution Service emphasized the prolonged abuse suffered by Andrea and her brother at the hands of Nix, culminating in the devastating loss of the young girl.

The prosecution was made possible by Desmond Bernard’s brave decision to come forward in 2022, shedding light on the truth behind the events of 1978. This act of courage led to justice being served for Andrea after almost five decades, highlighting the resilience and determination of the victims in seeking accountability for the past.
