Malak Alsweirki, a resilient Gazan, has overcome the challenges of living in a war-torn region to pursue her studies at a prestigious university. Evacuated from Gaza, where her family resides in a tent, the 20-year-old emphasizes the shared humanity of those in conflict zones. With an opportunity to study at Trinity College Dublin, she highlights the life-and-death circumstances that influenced her decision to leave.
Having received offers from renowned institutions like Cambridge, Harvard, and Yale, Malak made a journey out of Gaza through Israel to reach Jordan for her evacuation. Reflecting on the stark contrast between her former life in Gaza and the reality of bombings, she expressed her relief at the chance to escape the ongoing turmoil.
As Gaza marks two years since the outbreak of conflict, Malak recounts the harrowing experiences of living in a war zone, emphasizing the pervasive fear, anxiety, and lack of basic necessities like food. Despite the challenges, she remains determined to excel in her studies and become a diplomat to represent her people’s aspirations for a better life.
Currently enrolled in a foundation course at Trinity College, Malak’s parents were reportedly injured by Israeli forces in late 2023, leaving them and her siblings living in a tent. She envisions a future where Gazans are recognized as individuals seeking a peaceful and fulfilling existence, devoid of conflict and suffering.
