“Tragic Sea Incident Claims Lives of Mother, Daughter”

Date:

A tragic incident unfolded at Withernsea in East Yorkshire when a 15-year-old girl, Grace Keeling, was swept out to sea along with her mother, Sarah Keeling, and a local man, Mark Ratcliffe. The trio encountered difficulties in the water on January 2, leading to a heartbreaking outcome.

During the inquest in Hull, details emerged from Grace’s friend, who had accompanied them on a day trip from Nottinghamshire. The friend recalled how they were capturing photos and videos near the sea when the sudden tragedy occurred. As they were enjoying themselves, Grace vanished within moments, prompting a frantic search and rescue effort.

Despite efforts from those present, including Mr. Ratcliffe and Mrs. Keeling, the situation quickly escalated due to the rough sea conditions. Witnesses described the chaotic scene, with waves reaching dangerous heights and rocks being hurled onto the promenade.

The search and recovery operations were extensive, involving multiple agencies and individuals. While the bodies of Mr. Ratcliffe and Mrs. Keeling were found promptly, it took 13 days to locate Grace’s body, which was eventually discovered trapped among large boulders used as sea defences.

The inquest highlighted the valiant attempts made by bystanders to assist in the crisis, emphasizing the challenging conditions faced by emergency services during the retrieval process. The testimonies painted a vivid picture of the harrowing events that unfolded that fateful day, leaving a profound impact on all those involved.
