A tragic incident occurred as a woman passed away during a procedure known as a Brazilian butt lift. Barbara Laura Souza Félix underwent surgery at a private clinic to transfer fat from her stomach and back to her buttocks. However, complications arose during the surgery, leading to a decline in her pulmonary ventilation and ultimately resulting in her death.
Medical personnel made efforts to revive the 27-year-old for over an hour, but she was declared deceased at 12:20pm. The suspected cause of death is believed to be a pulmonary embolism, potentially related to the fat transfer procedure.
Authorities initiated an investigation into the incident, and Barbara’s body was sent for a post-mortem examination at the André Roquette Legal Medical Institute. A resident of Belo Horizonte, Brazil, Barbara was a single individual with no children and no known underlying health issues. She was described by her relatives as a vibrant and responsible person who cherished life.
Her family expressed concerns regarding the surgery and response times following the tragedy. The surgeon’s legal representative emphasized that proper pre-operative evaluations were conducted and all necessary clinical protocols were adhered to.
This unfortunate event has highlighted the risks associated with gluteal fat grafting procedures, commonly referred to as Brazilian butt lifts, which have faced increased scrutiny globally due to higher complication rates. The clinic where the incident occurred is facing scrutiny, especially after a similar case resulted in the death of a 39-year-old woman in 2021.
