With the countdown to a thrilling summer of top-tier football underway, Brits are preparing for the excitement ahead.
Despite the widespread admiration for the sport, a significant portion of fans are more casual in their approach, as revealed by recent research conducted by Asda. The study indicates that 60% of individuals classify themselves as fair-weather supporters, while 48% feel out of their depth when discussions about football arise.
However, this lack of deep understanding doesn’t diminish the enthusiasm, with 74% of respondents expressing enjoyment of the key moments in football matches, even if they don’t grasp all the intricacies of the game.
In an effort to bridge the gap, Asda has enlisted the expertise of former England star Chris Kamara and ex-Scotland striker Kris Boyd to educate fans on the essentials. Moving away from the traditional setting, the duo is simplifying rules, terminology, and pivotal moments in matches that often puzzle fans, such as offside and player positions, to empower shoppers to engage confidently in football conversations.
Chris Kamara emphasized the inclusivity of football, stating, “Football is for everyone, whether you’re a lifelong follower or someone who tunes in mainly during major tournaments. We all have to start somewhere, and if a few simple tips can boost people’s confidence in joining discussions, then that’s truly valuable.”
Adding to this sentiment, Kris Boyd remarked, “Being a fair-weather fan is perfectly acceptable. Major tournaments bring people together, and one doesn’t need to be an expert on every aspect of the game to relish the experience. If we can assist people in grasping the fundamentals, having fun, and feeling involved in conversations, then we’ve achieved our objective.”
Asda is further amplifying this campaign in its stores, where staff members are identifiable by badges reading “Football Fanatic” or “Fair-Weather Fan,” signifying their readiness to engage in match-related discussions, regardless of fans’ expertise levels.
The instructional video series featuring Kamara and Boyd will be accessible on Asda’s social platforms, offering fans an opportunity to brush up on the basics ahead of the upcoming tournament.
