A mother from the UK, Donna Jobling, faced a critical health battle after contracting Legionnaires’ disease during her vacation in Greece, leaving her in a coma for 16 days. Unfortunately, she now fears she may never fully recover from the ordeal.
Donna, 58, was on a £1,500-per-couple all-inclusive trip to a picturesque Greek island with her husband Sid, 70, and two friends when she fell ill with the disease. She spent over two weeks in intensive care at Venizeleio Hospital in Crete, where she was placed in an induced coma, rendering her reliant on assistance for basic movements.
Upon her return to the UK, Donna was diagnosed with Guillain-Barré syndrome, a severe autoimmune disorder often triggered by infections. This condition affects nerve function, impacting mobility and breathing, as per the NHS. Donna, hailing from Hull, Humberside, faced a dramatic loss of independence following the holiday incident.
The holiday company expressed regret over Donna’s ongoing health struggles and expressed hopes for a prompt resolution. Donna lamented the significant changes in her life post-illness, with her husband now acting as her primary caregiver as she battles the debilitating effects of Guillain-Barré syndrome.
Legionnaires’ disease, transmitted through inhaling contaminated water droplets, led to Donna’s respiratory failure and pneumonia. Her family stood by her during the challenging times. Seeking legal support, Donna engaged Hudgell Solicitors to pursue a claim against the tour operator, easyJet.
While easyJet agreed to fund regular physiotherapy sessions for Donna, they are yet to confirm support for occupational therapy, as requested. The responsibility for Donna contracting Legionnaires’ disease during her stay at the Sergios Hotel in Hersonissos remains under dispute.
