“Escape from Dubai: Businessman’s Harrowing Ordeal”

Date:

In February 2019, Wolfgang Douglas was alarmed when his father, Albert Douglas, finally contacted him after a ten-day silence. The distressing call confirmed the family’s worst fears – Albert had been seized while attempting to escape from Dubai and endured traumatic mistreatment that would scar him for life.

Six years earlier, Albert, a 63-year-old businessman who once mingled with Dubai’s affluent circles, recounted being forcibly taken by UAE guards near the Oman border, blindfolded, and transported to an undisclosed location. His ordeal began as he sought freedom following unjust arrest and detention in August 2019 over debts linked to a family member’s business, which he was not involved in.

During the two years leading up to his escape endeavor, Albert claimed he faced daily blackmail and financial ruin. Reports suggest that his accusers leveraged their connections, known as “wasta,” to coerce authorities into pressuring and falsely accusing him.

Besieged by threats from creditors and feeling helpless against a system he deemed unfair, Albert felt compelled to flee to Oman while on bail awaiting a court hearing. However, upon capture, he endured several days of physical abuse and torture in a squalid cell, fearing for his life.

Thus commenced a grueling five-year saga during which Albert was wrongfully imprisoned for debts amounting to £2.5 million, relentlessly pursued by creditors alleging bounced checks. Confined in notorious UAE penitentiaries like Al Ain and the infamous ‘Dubai’s Alcatraz’ prison, Al-Awir, Albert, later cleared by the UN, reportedly witnessed inhumane treatment of fellow inmates amidst appalling conditions.

The West London grandfather recounted instances of physical assault when he requested vital heart medication, forced to drink from unsanitary facilities, and subjected to repeated head kicks during interrogations. Refusing to sign a coerced confession at Bur Dubai Police Station, as detailed in a UN report, Albert faced physical and mental torture over multiple nights.

Tragically, Albert described being struck unconscious by Al Ain guards, witnessing instances of rape and suicide within the prison walls. Recently, his harrowing tale resurfaced following allegations that Katie Price’s husband, Lee Andrews, appropriated his experiences to fabricate a deceitful narrative.

Katie, in a social media post, claimed Lee had been “kidnapped” and mistreated, only for it to be revealed as a misunderstanding leading to his brief detention over a private civil matter. Despite expectations of his imminent release, Lee may remain incarcerated for weeks due to financial obligations.

While Albert eventually reunited with his family, the psychological scars linger. Wolfgang, haunted by his efforts to secure his father’s freedom, characterized the experience as assuming the role of a family leader amidst a challenging situation he likened to facing a dictatorship.

Wolfgang highlighted the prevalence of “financial entrapment” cases in Dubai, recounting numerous distress calls from individuals ensnared in what he described as an “open-air prison.” Expressing disdain for Lee’s alleged fabrications, Wolfgang, a Romani-Gypsy Movement advocate, denounced him as a “fakie” and a “conman.”

Having navigated the unjust legal landscape of the UAE, Wolfgang shed light on the severe consequences for debtors, emphasizing the ruthless tactics used in financial disputes to coerce settlements, seize assets, or eliminate competitors. He warned expatriates of the precarious situation in Dubai, where falling out of favor could lead to dire consequences.

Amidst economic turmoil and geopolitical tensions, Wolfgang painted a bleak picture of Dubai’s once-thriving business environment now plagued by uncertainty and exploitation of vulnerable individuals. He underscored the urgent need for caution among entrepreneurs facing financial traps and the looming threat of travel bans.

Wolfgang’s firsthand account underscored the grave repercussions of financial disputes in Dubai, where accusations could swiftly escalate into criminal charges with minimal recourse for the accused. In a system he deemed rigged and oppressive, innocence often held little weight against unsubstantiated claims.

As Dubai grapples with economic challenges and an exodus of wealth, Wolfgang cautioned that those left behind faced an increasingly toxic and oppressive environment. The ongoing crisis in the Gulf region and shifting economic landscape have left many entrepreneurs in disarray, seeking refuge from an unforgiving system.

The Mirror’s attempts to seek comments from Dubai’s Ministry of Justice and Lee Andrews were unsuccessful.
