Three children and one adult tragically lost their lives when a vehicle collided with a group of cyclists in a rural area of the Netherlands. The incident occurred near the village of Vogelwaarde, close to the Belgian border, while the group was on a school trip, Dutch authorities confirmed.
Following the collision, a 19-year-old man was taken into custody by the police for investigation, although his role in the incident has not been disclosed. At the scene, two children and an adult succumbed to their injuries, while four children were transported to hospitals in the Netherlands and Belgium with severe injuries. Sadly, one of the injured children passed away on Thursday evening at a hospital in Rotterdam, according to the Zeeland Security Region organization.
The victims were identified as part of a group comprising 14 schoolchildren and two supervisors from an elementary school in the nearby town of Axel. Authorities have initiated an inquiry to determine the cause of the collision on a provincial road that traverses farmers’ fields near Vogelwaarde, approximately 200 kilometers (125 miles) south of Amsterdam.
