Ronnie O’Sullivan has expressed his condolences following the passing of Mika Immonen, a renowned pool player who has succumbed to cancer at the age of 52.
Immonen, a former world nineball pool champion, was highly respected in the sport and shared a close friendship with snooker icon O’Sullivan, who was deeply saddened by the news.
In a heartfelt message, O’Sullivan shared, “So saddened by the loss of my friend Mika, someone I held in high regard. We shared memorable moments together, including runs in the forest during his visits to the UK. Mika was not only a phenomenal pool player of his generation, but our personal times together will forever be cherished. Today, I am devastated. x”
Immonen made history as the first Finnish player to clinch the World Nineball Championship in 2001. He further solidified his legacy in the sport by securing consecutive US Open Pool Championship titles in 2008 and 2009.
Known as The Iceman, Immonen was a fixture at the Mosconi Cup, representing Team Europe on 15 occasions and contributing to four victories. He was recognized as the player of the decade for the 2000s.
In a career-defining moment in 2012, Immonen triumphed at the World Cup for Finland alongside Petri Makkonen. Tragically, he was diagnosed with cancer in 2023.
