The United Kingdom has pledged substantial support to Ukrainian families impacted by Russian attacks on crucial power infrastructure through a significant two-year energy agreement. Keir Starmer, the UK Prime Minister, has revealed a plan to supply electricity to Ukraine’s nuclear facilities for the next two years, emphasizing the commitment to assist the war-torn nation during challenging times.
During the G7 summit in Evian, France, Mr. Starmer unveiled a £210 million support initiative aimed at aiding Ukrainian families. He urged global leaders to intensify efforts in securing peace for Ukraine. Additionally, Downing Street is set to announce a comprehensive sanctions package targeting Russia’s illicit shadow fleet.
In a groundbreaking operation, British forces intercepted a sanctioned Russian shadow fleet oil tanker in the English Channel for the first time. The vessel, Smyrtos, was detained and relocated to an anchorage off the South Coast of England. The “ghost fleet,” consisting of around 700 vessels, clandestinely transports 75% of Russia’s sanctioned oil, crucial for financing Vladimir Putin’s military endeavors and posing environmental and security risks.
Further measures will be introduced, including sanctions on vessels handling Russian Liquid Natural Gas, to curb illicit activities. The UK government is emphasizing the importance of learning from the Ukraine conflict, with a focus on defense strategies and investments.
The ongoing defense spending dispute may lead to challenging discussions for Mr. Starmer during the G7 meetings, where he is scheduled to engage with world leaders such as US President Donald Trump. The Prime Minister reiterated the UK’s solidarity with Ukraine, aiming to weaken Putin’s war efforts and ensure the nation’s energy needs are met.
The new energy agreement, discussed during a meeting between the UK PM and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, involves providing enriched uranium to Ukraine’s nuclear power producer Energoatom. This deal, supported by £210 million from UK Export Finance to supplier Urenco, will help sustain over 50% of Ukraine’s electricity needs.
