Moving to a different country is a significant undertaking that often involves unexpected financial challenges. One British expat shared her experience of relocating to Canada and highlighted a surprising expense that caught her off guard.
Louise Ware-Armstrong, a lifestyle and travel vlogger who moved from the UK to Niagara Falls in Ontario, recently posted a TikTok video where she detailed her monthly expenses in Canada. While most of her costs aligned with her expectations, she pointed out that one particular service stood out for its high cost compared to what she was used to in the UK.
In the video, which garnered over 11,000 likes, Louise emphasized the exorbitant prices of phone plans in Canada. She mentioned that finding an affordable phone plan was a challenge and shared that her combined expenses for mobile phone, home internet, and TV services amounted to around 400 Canadian dollars (£215) per month.
She noted, “For my phone, internet, and TV package, the total cost comes to around $400 a month, which is quite expensive.” This revelation sparked a conversation among viewers who agreed that the cost of living in Canada, particularly for communication services, is a significant issue.
Although the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) reported a decline in mobile prices in recent years, international comparisons still rank Canada as one of the pricier markets for wireless services.
According to WhistleOut, the average monthly mobile phone bill in Canada is approximately CA$64 (£34), significantly higher than in the UK. Industry studies consistently place Canada among the more expensive countries for mobile phone services, attributing it to a less competitive market and higher infrastructure costs.
Louise’s breakdown of her monthly budget post-relocation highlighted that while she pays 1,650 Canadian dollars in rent for her two-bedroom home, it was the costs of phone and internet services that posed the greatest financial challenge for her after moving abroad.
