Trump’s Iran Policies: A Disastrous Contrast

Date:

US President Donald Trump has frequently drawn parallels between his approach to Iran and that of his predecessor, Barack Obama. He has criticized the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action negotiated during the Obama administration as a “bad deal,” warning it could lead to Iran obtaining nuclear weapons. However, Trump’s poorly executed and disastrous military actions against Iran have destabilized geopolitics, harmed the global economy, and resulted in significant loss of life.

A comparison between Obama’s JCPOA and the outcomes of Trump’s aggressive stance towards Iran reveals a stark contrast in results and the potential for reaching any new agreements. Trump’s actions have showcased Tehran’s ability to disrupt global energy trade by threatening to close the vital Strait of Hormuz, empowering Iran to act more assertively than ever. Furthermore, the prospects of reaching a new nuclear deal with Iran have become more distant.

While Obama’s JCPOA, which was terminated by Trump in 2018 and supported by European allies, focused on strict monitoring of Iran’s nuclear activities to prevent weaponization in exchange for limited sanctions relief, Trump’s actions have led to a more significant concession by offering extensive sanctions relief and substantial reparations to Iran.

The repercussions extend to the Middle East, with funds flowing to Iran-backed groups like Hezbollah, Hamas, and the Yemeni Houthis. Israel, which opposed Obama’s JCPOA due to concerns about Tehran’s compliance, is even more critical of Trump’s approach, as it excludes Israel from negotiations and restricts its ability to confront Hezbollah, a move Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu would likely reject.

Moreover, the fallout from Trump’s policies has resulted in higher fuel prices in the West and placed Iranian dissidents at risk of persecution by government forces. Trump’s promises of support to these rebels have not materialized, leaving them vulnerable to severe reprisals for their opposition activities.
