“Belfast Stabbing Victim Emerges from Coma, Faces Eye Damage”

Date:

The victim of a recent stabbing incident in Belfast has emerged from a medically induced coma, although there are concerns about potential permanent damage to his right eye, according to his family. Stephen Ogilvie, who already lost his left eye and sustained severe injuries to his head, face, and back during the attack at Kinnaird Avenue in north Belfast, is facing a challenging recovery ahead.

Hadi Alodid, aged 30, has been charged with attempted murder in relation to the stabbing and appeared in Belfast Magistrates’ Court. His next court appearance is scheduled via videolink on July 8.

Mr. Ogilvie’s family expressed gratitude for the support received following the assault, mentioning that although they are relieved he is no longer in a coma, there are significant hurdles ahead, including the risk of losing vision in his right eye. They acknowledged the overwhelming kindness shown by many, even from strangers.

The perpetrator, a Sudanese national named Alodid, entered Northern Ireland from Dublin in February 2023 after traveling from Paris. Upon arrival, he sought asylum and was granted permission to stay in the UK until 2028.

The violent incident was captured in a widely circulated video clip, prompting reactions from various individuals, including tech mogul Elon Musk and activist Tommy Robinson, urging people to take action. Subsequently, anti-immigration unrest erupted, resulting in property damage, fires, and racially motivated attacks. Law enforcement has made 35 arrests and charged 23 individuals in connection with the disorder.
