UK Heatwave Set to Surpass Barbados Temperatures

Date:

Parts of the United Kingdom are expected to experience heatwave conditions, with temperatures potentially surpassing those of the Caribbean island of Barbados. The warmest areas could see temperatures reaching up to 32C, while other regions are forecasted to climb into the high 20s by the end of the week.

Specifically, the south and south-east regions of England are likely to face heatwave temperatures starting on Saturday, June 20, extending more widely by Sunday, June 21. Additionally, parts of southern England could hit 30C by Friday, June 19.

The Met Office defines a heatwave as three consecutive days where the daily maximum temperatures meet or exceed the heatwave threshold. This threshold varies across regions, ranging from 25C in Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales, and parts of the southwest of England, to 28C in London and its surrounding areas.

In comparison, Barbados is set to experience temperatures fluctuating between 26C and 30C on Sunday. The Met Office predicts even higher temperatures for the south and south-east of England on Monday, potentially reaching 33C in some locations.

Despite the high temperatures, intermittent spells of rain are expected, especially in northern and western areas, along with a slight chance of thunderstorms in south-eastern England.

A yellow heat health alert has been issued by the UK Health Security Agency for certain regions, indicating a greater risk to vulnerable individuals and a potential strain on healthcare services. The alert is in effect from Wednesday, June 17, until Monday, June 22.

Gregory Wolverson, deputy chief forecaster at the Met Office, noted the contrasting weather patterns across the UK, with unsettled conditions in the north-west and rising temperatures in the south and east. He emphasized the likelihood of temperatures meeting heatwave criteria in southern and eastern England.

While high temperatures are expected, not all areas may experience continuous sunshine due to increased cloud cover. Thunderstorms may also develop, bringing heavy showers and local impacts.

Beachgoers are advised to be mindful of sea-surface temperatures, which are not as warm as in mid-summer. Additionally, caution is urged following incidents of drowning during a previous hot spell in May and early June.
