A woman called her partner to express feeling unwell, only to later learn she had a limited time left to live. Michelle Shoveller, a 42-year-old carer from Kent, was diagnosed with glioblastoma, a severe type of brain tumor, after experiencing vertigo as her only symptom.
Her boyfriend, Lee Cuzner, became aware of the seriousness of the situation when Michelle called him from work feeling unwell. Upon arriving at her location, he found her in distress, prompting a call to emergency services. Michelle was subsequently rushed to Medway Maritime Hospital, where scans revealed lesions in her brain. Further tests confirmed the presence of a tumor, initially unsure of its malignancy.
Following a seven-hour surgery to remove the tumor, it was discovered that only 98% had been successfully excised. The residual 2% regrew rapidly, surpassing the original size. Subsequent consultations at King’s College Hospital confirmed the diagnosis of stage four glioblastoma, the most severe form of brain cancer.
Despite undergoing various treatments, Michelle was given a terminal prognosis, with a life expectancy of around one to 18 months. Determined to create lasting memories, she, Lee, and their children embarked on a trip to Disneyland Paris. Upon their return, Michelle required further medical intervention to address brain fluid buildup, followed by intensive radiotherapy and ongoing care from Wisdom Hospice.
Michelle now experiences complete loss of sensation and movement on her left side. She is currently undergoing experimental treatment, funded through a GoFundMe page set up by the couple to assist with medical costs and improve Michelle’s remaining time. Lee, Michelle’s partner of 28 years, remains optimistic, ensuring they continue to enjoy outings together and prepare for the inevitable funeral expenses.
