A grandmother from Derby who used to show support for the NHS by banging pans has passed away shortly after receiving her Covid-19 booster shot.
Mohinder Kaur Mahal, aged 85, encountered difficulties speaking a week after receiving both the Covid-19 booster vaccine and a flu shot in Derby. She was subsequently admitted to the hospital and tragically suffered a fatal stroke twelve days after being vaccinated at Royal Derby Hospital on October 31, 2022, as revealed during an inquest into her death on June 22.
Concerns were raised by the family about a potential connection between the Covid jab and her stroke. Baldev Mahal, the son of Mrs. Mahal, who served as her primary caregiver, voiced his suspicions during the inquest at Leicester Coroner’s Court, stating, “I have a strong belief now that there was some sort of trigger that led my mother down this path. I do not intend to cast doubt on the vaccine, but this is what transpired in my mother’s case.”
It was disclosed during the inquest that Mrs. Mahal had a fear of contracting Covid-19 and had initially declined the vaccine on multiple occasions before eventually agreeing to it. Mr. Mahal highlighted that they were not informed during the appointment that she would be receiving a booster shot, nor were they provided with any informational leaflets about the vaccines.
Mr. Mahal emphasized the lack of informed consent, especially considering his mother’s health conditions and academic background, suggesting that a clearer explanation should have been given to them.
Despite the family’s concerns, a stroke consultant at Royal Derby Hospital, Dr. James Scott, expressed his opinion that the vaccination did not contribute to Mrs. Mahal’s stroke, citing her preexisting heart failure and prior brain injury from a previous stroke as significant factors.
The inquest also delved into the family dynamics and Mrs. Mahal’s personal struggles with the isolation brought about by the pandemic. The proceedings were relocated to Leicester from Derby due to allegations of bias by Baldev Mahal against the previous coroner, a claim that has been refuted.
The investigation is ongoing, with further details expected to emerge as the inquest progresses.
