UK Issues Additional Amber Heat Warning for 40C Scorcher

Date:

An additional severe heat warning has been issued by the UK’s Met Office, signaling oppressive conditions as temperatures may soar up to 40C. This surge in temperatures is attributed to a “heat-dome” settling over western Europe, causing extreme weather conditions across the region.

The peak heat is anticipated today and Thursday, with red alerts already in effect from the Met Office, and now an additional amber warning has been issued for Friday. Grahame Madge, a spokesperson for the Met Office, mentioned the new amber alert specifically for eastern and central England, with the possibility of further updates as the forecast progresses.

The extended amber alert encompasses a significant portion of England, particularly in central, southern, and eastern regions, including areas as far north as Manchester. The alert spans from midnight on Thursday for a duration of 24 hours.

The Met Office forecasts continued very hot weather for much of England, with daytime temperatures expected to surpass 30 degrees Celsius, peaking around 38 degrees Celsius in eastern and central England. Nighttime temperatures are likely to remain high, not dropping below the high teens to low 20s Celsius, accompanied by elevated humidity levels. Cooler conditions are anticipated to gradually prevail from the west, with the east and southeastern parts of England still experiencing warm weather through Saturday, although not as scorching as earlier in the week.

A red Met Office weather warning for extreme heat, covering a wide area from London to Swansea, and the south coast to Birmingham, is currently active until Thursday at 9 pm. During the peak of the ongoing heatwave, temperatures could approach the UK’s record high of 40.3C recorded in Lincolnshire in July 2022, potentially surpassing the June record of 35.6C set in Hampshire in 1976.

The combination of intense heat and humidity may pose risks to public health, infrastructure, and essential services such as power and water supplies, affecting various sectors including transportation, energy, and water distribution. The heightened temperatures might also lead to an increase in water safety incidents, as more individuals are likely to visit coastal areas, lakes, or rivers during the heatwave.

BBC weather forecaster Chris Fawkes has predicted that the June temperature record is likely to be broken significantly, with temperatures expected to reach around 37-38C. Overnight temperatures on Wednesday maintained warmth, with locations like Brize Norton in Oxfordshire and Heathrow in west London staying above 20C, according to the Met Office.
