A tragic incident unfolded at the Download Festival when a young woman, Caitlyn Whitley, discovered her father, Paul John Whitley, unresponsive in their camping tent. The 19-year-old initially assumed he was sleeping in, but upon closer inspection, found him motionless on the floor. Frantically, Caitlyn contacted her mother, Emmilou Firshman, for assistance. Together with Emmilou’s husband, they managed to remove Paul from the tent.
The circumstances surrounding Paul’s passing remain unclear, with authorities from Leicestershire Police indicating no suspicious activity. Caitlyn recalled the morning of the incident, sharing her futile attempts to rouse her father from what appeared to be a distressing position inside the tent.
Emergency services swiftly arrived at the scene, providing assistance while maintaining the family’s privacy. Despite the ongoing investigation, Caitlyn expressed certainty that her father’s death was not linked to substance abuse. She fondly reminisced about their shared journey to the festival, highlighting Paul’s enthusiasm for the music event and his love for metal bands like Limp Bizkit and Hollywood Undead.
Paul, a devoted son caring for his ailing mother, was described by Caitlyn as a jovial father figure known for his affectionate demeanor and penchant for dad jokes. Despite their separation over a decade ago, Emmilou emphasized their amicable co-parenting relationship centered around their daughter, Caitlyn.
Both Caitlyn and Emmilou commended the Download Festival’s responsive support team, particularly praising the assistance provided by a staff member named James Dean. In light of the tragic loss, the family has initiated a GoFundMe campaign to aid Caitlyn with the funeral expenses.
