“Flight Attendants Use Secret Code to Ensure Passenger Safety”

Date:

Flight attendants often use a discreet ‘secret code’ to greet passengers, as revealed by a cabin crew instructor. While the customary welcome aboard a flight is a familiar experience for most travelers, the purpose behind this practice goes beyond hospitality. According to Gabriel Randone, a Cabin Crew Instructor at Wizz Air, greeting passengers is an integral part of ensuring their safety during the flight.

Randone explained that cabin crew conduct a quick “mental scan” of passengers to verify their fitness for the journey and are trained to follow a secret acronym as part of this process. While the specifics of the acronym remain confidential to passengers, it helps cabin crew identify any potential issues such as aggression, intoxication, or medical conditions that may pose safety risks.

Passengers seated near emergency exit rows will notice cabin crew monitoring the area for similar safety reasons. These crew members are tasked with assessing passengers as certain individuals are restricted from sitting next to emergency exits due to safety regulations.

Although emergency exit rows are popular for their extra legroom, it’s important to note that not all passengers are eligible to occupy these seats. Wizz Air’s policy prohibits passengers under 16 years old, overweight individuals, persons with special needs, expectant mothers, and those traveling with infants under two years old from sitting in Extra Legroom or Front Row seats.

Passengers seated in these designated rows must be capable of operating the exits in case of an emergency and receive a specific briefing to fulfill this responsibility. In the event that these seats remain unoccupied, cabin crew will select a volunteer, known as an “able-bodied person,” to relocate there to assist in emergencies.

Gabriel emphasized the critical nature of swift action during emergencies, highlighting the limited time available to evacuate a full cabin. In such scenarios, every second counts, and the primary focus is on ensuring a rapid and efficient evacuation process.
