“Former Wimbledon Champ Vondrousova Suspended for Doping Test Refusal”

Date:

Former Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova has received a four-year suspension from professional tennis for declining a doping test in December. Vondrousova, who was ranked No.6 globally, expressed her displeasure on Instagram when a doping control officer arrived unannounced at her residence for an out-of-competition test last year.

In a recent statement, Vondrousova, who clinched the Wimbledon title in 2023, described the incident as a violation of her privacy. She explained feeling overwhelmed and fearful due to the unannounced visit late at night without proper identification or following protocol, leading her to be concerned for her safety.

Medical experts confirmed that Vondrousova experienced an Acute Stress Reaction and Generalised Anxiety Disorder during the incident. The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) confirmed the charges against Vondrousova for refusing the test, resulting in the four-year ban due to her failure to provide a compelling reason for her actions.

The ITIA released a statement stating that an independent tribunal imposed the suspension on Vondrousova for not submitting a sample during an out-of-competition test at her home in December 2025. The ITIA emphasized that the sanction for refusing a test is equivalent to testing positive to prevent individuals from evading penalties by refusing to be tested.

Karen Moorhouse, the CEO of ITIA, acknowledged the discomfort of the testing process for players but highlighted the necessity to maintain fair competition. Moorhouse emphasized the importance of safety and welfare for both players and testers, ensuring proper identification and procedures during testing to protect the integrity of the sport.

Vondrousova cited stress, mental health issues, and safety concerns as contributing factors to her decision during the hearing. The doping control officer’s testimony was also considered by the tribunal, which ultimately determined that there was no sufficient justification for Vondrousova’s refusal to undergo the test.
