The Met Office has issued a warning that overnight heat will result in uncomfortable warmth in homes, exacerbated by high humidity levels. Britain is currently experiencing a heatwave with record-breaking temperatures and red alert warnings in place. Meteorologists note that this heatwave feels more intense than previous ones due to unique atmospheric conditions.
The Met Office has emphasized the concern over nighttime temperatures, stating that warm and humid air will make it challenging for both individuals and buildings to cool down. A red alert heat warning covering significant parts of England predicts that temperatures will remain high overnight, with some areas not dropping below the low 20s Celsius. These high temperatures will be accompanied by elevated humidity levels.
Forecaster Aiden McGivern from the Met Office explained on their YouTube channel that the lingering high temperatures overnight will prevent buildings and homes from cooling down adequately. He highlighted the impact of high humidity levels, stating that this heatwave feels more intense due to the combination of heat and humidity, leading to a higher heat index.
McGivern stressed that the Met Office is particularly concerned about the heat index, which considers the combined effects of heat and humidity. The prolonged heat exposure is expected to result in buildings retaining heat, further exacerbating the situation. The current high temperatures are attributed to a “heat-dome” settling over western Europe, causing extreme conditions across the continent and the UK.
